September 2017 Newsletter

A few words from Ms. Kerrie:

8J0A0498.jpg

Welcome to our 14th Season, Where ART Has HEART! We are excited to see so many friendly faces and to welcome our new families and students with open hearts.  As our mission states, we are founded on a love for the arts and a passion to educate and enrich the lives of the children and families we serve and we really do it with a lot of HEART.

“Our endings create our beginnings…” this phrase has been on my mind as we pick up and start another year together.  It was delightful to watch the My Kind of Town recital video with some of our students at our Back to Dance Bash at the end of August.  It really was a beautiful show, and watching it was the perfect ending to our new beautiful beginning together.

Fall is a symbol of change; it marks the end of the summer season and the beginning of a new school year, and September in particular is a month filled with transitions and enthusiasm.  Our teachers and staff have been busy planning and preparing to welcome you. The start of the new season is always an exciting time as it may introduce you to new classmates and friendships, new teachers, new styles of dance or new skills.

In the classroom, we are building on the foundations of the previous year, setting goals, and forecasting where we want to be by the end of the school year.  For our youngest dancers, we are learning how to work in a group and follow instructions from the teacher and work together with our new dancing friends.  Our advanced dancers are training hard and pursuing a deeper sense of artistry in their work.  The studio is bustling and filled with positivity and some really great dancing is happening here.  What warms my heart even more than the amazing dancing happening in the classrooms is knowing that these kids really are getting so much more than just great dancing- they are developing skills that they will carry with them into adulthood- confident, critical thinkers, with a deep appreciation for the arts!

Forevermore is proud to be a part of the More Than Just Great Dancing movement and our enthusiasm for upholding the mission is heartfelt.

Thank you for being a part of Forevermore’s 14th Season, we’re so glad you’re here!

Here's to a beautiful new beginning!

Always,

Ms. Kerrie

Parent Teacher Conferences January, 29

At the end of January we will be holding Parent / Teacher Conferences at Forevermore.

You and your child are invited to schedule an appointment to stop by and visit with your child’s dance teacher and discuss their progress and development in our programs.  You can schedule an appointment to meet with our teachers using this link:

This is also an excellent opportunity to learn more about skills testing for class placement this spring in our Graded Technique Classes - Ballet, Tap, and Jazz.

The Skills Testing Exams are a tool for evaluating where students are at with our curriculum and help guide them in areas they can improve.  Our Skills Testing will also help decide class placement for the 2017-2018 Season.

How this benefits our students?

  • Provides students and their families better understanding of student progress and development.
  • Targets areas that need improvement and encourages practice at home.
  • Specifies the skills needed to advance and gives the student accountability for their progression.
  • Enables Forevermore to evaluate and hold teachers accountable for our curriculum standards.

Although school grade and age can be used as a guide for determining class placement, advancement has always been based on correct alignment, skill mastery, and instructor recommendation- which means each class may have a variety of ages. Students may spend an average of two years at each level before mastering the skills to advance.  Forevermore Students will receive annual skills tests. Ballet students will take an additional vocabulary test.

We are proud to continue to serve the children of our community and provide quality arts education in a fun, loving, and supportive environment.  We look forward to meeting with you.

Tickets go on sale January 15 through TutuTix and will be available on our website click here.

Feature on our Creative Movement Program:

At Forevermore we teach a unique ballet based arts enrichment curriculum for our little ones written by Ms. Kerrie and lead by our new head children’s teacher, Ms. Ellen.   The precious little ones may look like they are just playing and having fun- but they are doing more than just having fun, they are busy developing important skills to help them succeed not only in future dance classes, but in all of their learning endeavors.

The Creative Movement program uses monthly themes to reinforce and teach the following curricular objectives: Understand class procedures and etiquette, such as taking turns while waiting in line; Create Round, Straight, and Curvy shapes at Low, Middle, and High levels; Be able to identify opposites; Apply the concepts of Over, Under, Around, and Through in movement; Accurately demonstrate non-locomotor /axial movements: Stretch, Bend, Twist, Turn, Rise, Fall, Swing;  Accurately demonstrate the eight basic locomotor movements:  Walk, Run, Hop, Jump, Leap, Gallop, Slide, and Skip while traveling forward, backward, sideways, diagonally, and turning;  Demonstrate accuracy in moving to a musical beat and responding to tempo changes; Demonstrate the ability to define and maintain personal space;  Be able to work individually, with partners, and in a group;  Recognize and identify a variety of composers and where they are from.

We are joyful and grateful to serve all of our students and filled with passion about the value arts enrichment and creative movement provides children.

The Benefits of Dance as stated by the NDEO on Standards for Dance in Early Childhood Education

Dance is a powerful ally for developing many of the attributes of a growing child. Dance helps children mature physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively. The physical benefits of dance are widely accepted, but the emotional, social and cognitive attributes have only begun to be appreciated.

Physical Development: Dancing utilizes the entire body and is an excellent form of exercise for total body fitness. Young children are naturally active, but dance offers an avenue to expand movement possibilities and skills.

Emotional Maturity: Dance promotes psychological health and maturity. Children enjoy the opportunity to express their emotions and become aware of themselves and others through creative movement. A pre-school child enters a dance class or classroom with a history of emotional experiences. Movement within a class offers a structured outlet for physical release while gaining awareness and appreciation of oneself and others.

Social Awareness: Dance fosters social encounter, interaction, and cooperation. Children learn to communicate ideas through the real and immediate mode of body movement. Children quickly learn to work within a group dynamic. As the sometimes challenging process of cooperation evolves, children learn to understand themselves in relation to others.

Cognitive Development: Young children will create movement spontaneously when presented with movement ideas or problems that can be solved with a movement response. Movement provides the cognitive loop between the idea, problem, or intent and the outcome or solution. This teaches an infant, child and, ultimately, adult to function in and understand the world they live in.

September 2016 Newsletter

Hi!

It’s the beginning of a new school year, a new dance season, a time for making new friends and reuniting with old ones.  Our lives are so busy and we all have so many things to do that it is easy to get swept away in the excitement of new routines.  We wanted to pause for a moment and thank you for choosing to be a part of Forevermore!

We are reaching out to our new friends and old friends to let you know that we’re so excited to have you dancing with us!  We truly hope all of our dancers and their families enjoy the year and the community here at Forevermore.

Here are a few ways to make your experience the best that it can be.

Stay Connected.

  • Check out Forevermore Dance & Theatre Arts via our website at www.4evermore.org. Answers to many common questions can be found on the website including important updates, the dress code and the studio calendar.
  • Forevermore is also on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/forevermoredance/#. We update our page often - information on studio closures, special promotions and studio news will be shared there.
  • Make sure Forevermore has the correct contact information for your family. Update your e-mail address at the front desk. All of our important announcement and tuition notices will be sent through email.
  • If you have questions for your dancer’s teacher, please send an email to the front desk at info@4evermore.org to get connected. Our classes run on a tight timeline, teachers normally won’t have time to answer questions or address issues between classes. We recommend you set up a meeting with your teacher and our director so that we can personally address any concerns you may have.

Studio logistics.

  • Come a little early to class - 10 minutes should give your dancer enough time to use the restroom, get their shoes on and get prepared for class.
  • Dancers should be ready to start dancing at the time their class starts. This means they have their shoes on, hair ready and are lined up to enter the studio. If your dancer needs to change at the studio, please allow ample time.
  • Dancers should have their hair pulled back and off their neck for all classes. Review the Dress Code for information about specific attire and hair requirements for your dancer’s classes.  All Ballet Classes (Level III and higher must wear hair in a bun.)

Personal Items.

  • Please put your dancer’s name on all dance items, especially shoes.
  • The lost and found box is located in the lobby- check it often.
  • Students should leave belongings in the cubbies in the hallway - bags, jackets and street shoes should stay outside the classroom.
  • Leave valuable items at home - Forevermore is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

As always, if you have any questions or needs, please let us know. The best way to contact is via email info@4evermore.org.

We look forward to a wonderful season of dancing with you!

Always,

Ms. Kerrie & Mr. David

We have many wonderful opportunities in store this year for all of our dancers to gain more exposure and experience with dance outside of weekly classes.   We are offering a series of 3 Master Classes with guest artists from Broadway in Chicago’s musicals: Annie, Phantom of the Opera, and Aladdin.  We have a monthly mini-camp series for our younger dancers ages 4-7 yrs old.  Pre-register for these exciting events.  At Forevermore we are committed to providing excellent training in a fun, loving, and supportive environment.

Exposure = Watching a variety of dancers, styles, and performances; Making contact with other students and professionals; Reading about dance or dance artists

Experience = Getting a taste of alternative ways of moving and patterning dance; Learning a dance; Participating in a performance; Working with master teachers or choreographers;

Training = Engaging in a course of study that prepares a dancer for the physical, cognitive, and mental requirements of codified dance forms/techniques; specialized practice and instruction over a period of time

To get ahead, your dancer needs a healthy balance of all three.

3 Reasons You Should Wear A Bun For Ballet Class

Love it or hate it, a ballet bun is classic and practical. You can wear it high on the crown of your head, or low, by the nape of your neck. Whichever you choose, here are three reasons why you should wear a bun in class.

1. Loose hair gets in your face.
It may look ethereal, but have you ever tried to bend or twist with loose hair? It’s a disaster. By the time you roll up, your hair looks like a crazy mop, and your vision is blocked from all the untamed strands covering your eyes. Not good. Having your hair in a bun is essential even for seemingly low-key barrework. Some exercises will require that you move your head, and you don’t want to choke on your own locks.

2. Turns are so much easier.
We have a saying in ballet class for loose hair that whips you in the face every time you turn: “helicopter hair”. Avoid the inevitable sharp lashing against your face by creating a secure bun. How: Start by making a sleek ponytail. Then, twist the ponytail into a tight bun. Finally, fasten it down with another hair tie followed by bobby pins to help hold the bun in place. Some figure they can wear a messy bun and it will be sufficient. But one set of pique turns across the floor with flying hair and you’ll be dancing to a different tune.

3. It honors tradition.
A ballet bun is not only classy and professional, it honors tradition. Think about it: you can wear loose hair anytime. But in ballet class, a beautiful bun is special to the art form. Having loose, messy hair shows disrespect and makes you look sloppy. Understandably, you may not have the time to make a bun, or maybe you have short hair. In this case, do your best to create a pulled-together look.

May 2016 Newsletter

Hello Forevermore Families,

They say April Showers bring May flowers…or in Chicago perhaps May Snowflakes.

Living in the midwest we learn to adapt and we become hearty, I think we also become humble and tap into a deeper understanding of gratitude as we learn to really appreciate a beautiful day when we get one.

I’m looking forward to finishing out the 2015-2016 Season strong and hearty, whatever the weather may be.   I’m confident that recital will be a beautiful day no matter what!

Our performance this year is called Imagine That! and we’ll be talking to our students this month about using our imaginations and telling stories through their dancing.  Imagination is such a powerful force - be it playful and silly, or bold and daring.  I think Albert Einstein said it best:  “Imagination is more important than knowledge.  For knowledge is limited to all we know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”

To kick off the count down to recital, we have a fun Facebook Contest for our students and families this month.   Make a video (15 sec max) in your “Imagine That” Recital T-Shirt and tell us or show us something you Imagine…let us know what’s inside your think bubble?  Win a $100 Scholarship for one of our Pure Imagination Camps or other Summer Programs.  Collecting submissions until June 1st.  After the 1st we will pick the top 3 and will open it to the public to vote for their favorite video. When you submit you must tag Forevermore Dance & Theatre Arts Inc #imaginethat2016.

We’d also like to announce that both Ms. Deanna and Ms. Taylor have decided to move on from their teaching roles at Forevermore for the 2016-2017 season.   Ms. Taylor will be moving back to Texas to be closer to her family as she prepares for the next stage of her life and plans to start a family of her own.   Ms. Deanna has decided to take an extended leave of absence to be a full-time stay at home mother for her 3 beautiful baby boys.   These were difficult decisions for both of these talented teaching artists and we are grateful for the love and energy they have shared with our students through the years.   We make this announcement to help celebrate the growth in their lives and wish them continued success on their life journeys.

Shining the Spotlight on some AMAZING Kids!

The Forevermore Dance Ensemble has had a full and exciting year of performances and events including:   Choreography Camp with Summer Showcase, Fall Fest at St. Francis Borgia, UDMA Costume Modeling, Spooky Ball, The Pulse Convention, Winter Wonderfest at Navy Pier, Stage Door Workshop with a cast member from the Lion King, Scamp Studios Team Building, Everybody Dance Now, Youth Summit for the Arts, Imagine Sister Studio Invitational, Be My Valentine Party, Bella Moxi Workshop, Forevermore Commercial video shoot, Wolves Game Flash Mob, Midwest Dance Connection in the Wisconsin Dells, Stage Door Workshop with a cast member from Matilda, Forevermore’s Spring Showcase, I Carry Your Heart with Me Benefit Concert in Kenosha, WI,  Dancefest at Sixflags, and The Power of Dance Competition!

We are always looking for new ways to inspire our students and help them understand the important message that we are more than just great dancing!   This weekend the Forevermore Dance Ensemble completed their season at a very special event- they competed with 24 pieces at the Power of Dance, where dancers perform not just for applause, but for a cause!

“The message that The Power of Dance wants to send to our kids, is that their talents and gifts do not reach their true potential until they are used to help others. Twenty years from today, our dancers will not remember what color ribbon she got last weekend. But she will remember the time that she danced to help pay for a baby's surgery. Or to grant a gravely ill child's wish.  She'll remember that she joined with her fellow artists in a common cause, and that together they made a difference in someone's life.   And that's why we've decided to harness The Power of Dance, and to encourage today's dancers to not only do well, but to do Good.”

Forevermore chose to represent Shriner’s Children’s Hospital and competed not just to win prizes for themselves, but donations for their charity.   We are proud to announce that they earned $300 and we are going to match their winnings - bringing the total amount raised this weekend to $600!  We care about the development of our students not just as dancers, but as people.  Congratulations again to a group of AMAZING dancers on an AMAZING season!
